How do I prepare and change the Original filter in my Brita® pitcher?
- Rinse your Brita® Original Filter with cold water for 15 seconds.
- Insert your Brita Original Filter into the reservoir below the line to seal. Press firmly for a tight seal.
- Add cold tap water.
- Discard your first three pitchers of filtered water or use it to water plants. It’s normal for carbon dust to appear in your first few fillings.

How often should I change my Original filter?
Your Brita® Water Pitcher has a built-in SmartLight filter indicator, so you'll know exactly when to replace your Original Filter—every 40 gallons, or about every 2 months for most households.^ If you have hard water, you may need to change filters more often. How do I clean my Brita® pitcher?
Remove the filter and hand-wash the rest of the pitcher components with mild soap, then rinse well. (Never use abrasive detergents or a dishwasher).
